Mistake One: Age

It is super important that the child is the right age to start music lessons. For us, in our experience 11 years of being in business, we think it is best to wait until the child is 7 years old or in first grade. When the child is younger than this age, it tends to be very tough for them. This is because it takes longer to see results. Many times, they blame themselves for spending six months to a year on the same piece of music while their older brother or sister is going at a much faster pace just because of age. Our advice is to wait until they are seven years old or they are in first grade.

Mistake Two: Instrument

A lot of parents want to choose the instrument for the child. We do not believe that this is a good strategy because we want them to be motivated in what they are doing. In a school like ours, students are able to see other students going into the other rooms, such as the drum room, guitar room, and piano room. We want students to be motivated in whatever instrument they are interested in. Some instruments, like the piano, are a great foundation, but it is not a good idea to force a child to play an instrument that he or she doesn’t like.

Mistake Three: Consistency

One of the biggest things we see in a lot of families is the lack of consistency. We have seen students that start taking lessons for three months, then they take two months off, and then start again. During the first three months or longer, it is very important to have consistency. Another situation we see often is parents want to have an idea as to whether or not their child is going to like an instrument within one or two weeks. However, we recommend taking at least two to three months of lessons to determine if the child truly likes the instrument. Additionally, it is not a good idea to start one instrument one month, then switch to another instrument the following month, and switch again the month after. In this case, you will not receive your money’s worth and in most cases, the student gets frustrated. There are instruments, like guitar, that are tougher for a beginner and require more time and effort. Most importantly, a lack of consistency can really be detrimental to the process and we do not believe that is a good way to start learning how to play an instrument.
